Otherwise, go for the sites that are on the outer circle of the loops but know that while the "Pony Patrollers" (volunteers/rangers) do a great job making sure people follow the rules during the day- they're hard to reach at night. If you're tenting and don't want to be near RV's a walk-in site OCeanside is your best option and if you have help and NOT a lot of gear- the quieter sites a tad closer to the beach are worth the walk. RESPECT THEM!!! They'll come close for pictures even WITHOUT food!!! A word about sites- yes, the Bayside has a better bathroom/shower scenario (individual rooms with real doors! Haha- beats the gross port-a-potties and no-privacy offered on the oceanside- but be sure to bring a lantern or flashlight as there are NO LIGHTS at any of the facilities.

Fun times! The ponies- so hard not to feed them/touch them- but they have been "trained" by visitors and they WILL bite! Not only at you but also at each other- think about it- if you offer one food the others will often fight them for it- picture seagulls but BIGGER with bone crushing kicking power. The ghost crabs are out in force (HUNDREDS!) and they're chasing their prey- prey that GLOWS IN THE DARK like a blacklight kinda thing.

BE SURE to take the time to grab a flashlight (one for every person in your group- trust me!) and head out to the ocean beach between 8:30pm and 1am. The beach is AMAZING at anytime- seriously- gorgeous clean sand- perfect!!! Bring boogie boards for the waves but be prepared to REALLY keep an eye on kiddos under 7 or 8- those waves come in hard and fast and sweep away EVERYTHING- including kiddos! There is also a night they offer a campfire on the beach (or you can have your own- just make sure your fire is down low on the beach so it's washed out with the tide). Your kids will have plenty of time to play in the surf and take pictures of ponies- the programs offer education disguised as FUN and they'll get a lot more out of the trip besides. Yes, it's a vacation and they're going to play on the beach BUT the programs they offer- especially the Clamming and Crabbing workshops are phenomenal for children or people unfamiliar with the ocean AND they provide the equipment for hands on experimentation afterwards. Then your kids can decide which programs they'd like to do and you can plan your days accordingly. Ranger booklet, weekly program schedule, and sign up for the kayak adventure they offer daily (alternating days morning or afternoon)- the kayaking is very limited, $10 a person- very reasonable- and usually books up 2 or 3 days in advance.

I wanted to take a minute to praise the Junior Ranger Program they offer FOR FREE! (If you have children 14 or younger - though best for 7-12ish) Before you even cross over to the island stop at the Visitor Center and pick up a free Jr. long tent stakes, Deet mosquito spray EVEN if you have young children- A SCREEN TENT in addition to your tent or camper). Any/all bushes/trees should be avoided as the mosquitoes LOVE them and if you touch them they'll swarm out like a pack of hungry.well bloodsuckers! A canopy over your tent will also allow you to wake up after 6am without it being 9,000 degrees in your tent! Other reviewers have done a great job with the basics (i.e. Also, that sun is NO JOKE! Be sure to pack a screen tent- perfect for around your picnic table so you can eat with less bug-slapping- and/or a canopy to provide yourself with some shade.

Maximum of two campsite reservations may be booked by any person, family, or party per visit.Ĭamping is limited to 14 consecutive days with a total of 28 cumulative days during any calendar year. This is the second year we've camped at the National Seashore- last year was the year of the Killer Mosquitoes- this year a reprieve- YAY! *A park ranger laid the bug situation out pretty well in saying- Count out 12 days after a heavy rainfall and then Mosquito Apocalypse for about a week.
